The Yuletide Enema

Every year, I hear and see the advertisements for all of those things that the retailers try to make us think that we just can't live without:

  • The year-end deal on a car;
  • That new, oh so stylish, coat;
  • The latest in telephonic gadgetry

This year, my wife and I, with a little D21 inspiration, decided to do something different; we decided to get rid of things instead of gathering them. (Gasp!)

In the first purge, just after Thanksgiving, we worked on the bedroom, living room, and dining room.  We donated clothing, books and a few odds and ends to Goodwill.  Oh, and also the entire entertainment center: television, stereo and speakers. (Double gasp!)  Don't worry, we're not becoming Luddites; I've repurposed an old, rarely used computer into a media center.

Today was our second 'purging' of the season: the basement.  I had no clue what we were going to find.  And what I did find surprised me:

12. Feet of shelving
11. Pints of pickles
10. Muttered curse words
9. Emptied storage containers
8. Brightly colored flower pots
7. Six-packs of homebrew
6. Bras that don't fit
5. Miles to Goodwill
4. Ill fitting suit coats
3. Worn out bathing suits
2. Camp stoves
1. Old metal dog kennel

The most surprising thing of all for me was the almost two cases of homebrew.  That's a whole 5-gallon batch!

Now the basement is relatively clean and free of clutter.  It's so much nicer to do laundry now that the boogyman has no place from which to jump out at us.

After two purges, I know that we still have at least two more.  But those will have to wait a bit; I'm tired right now.  I think I'll go watch a movie on my new media center.
